How to be happy, in seven easy steps.

Step 1. Meet the woman of your dreams. Let her be perfect in nearly every way. Overlook her one flaw -- a tendency to slap you in public.

Step 2.  When in doubt, get the shiniest one.

Step 3. Go talk to her folks. It looks scary, don’t it?

In the end, though, there were smiles.

And there was a beautiful dinner, hosted by the neighbors - Valerie and John Slack

Step 4. Ask. You’ll have to use your imagination. After many elaborate planning sessions, I wanted it to just be us, and to be at a place that was special to us. Sunday, June 30, 2002, at 8:30 PM, I got down on one knee, told her about steps 1 and 3, and showed her step 2. Her response? Knock the ring out of my hand and kiss me. She cried a lot. I cried a little just because I got a little something in my eye. I didn’t know I could be that happy.

Step 5. Smile! And Sparkle!

Step 6. Open a bottle of champagne and work the phones!

Step 7. Live happily ever after. We’re in the middle of this one, and hoping to make it official next Fall (2003).
